Figure Wishlist - Max Factory Galko-chan

It may come as a surprise to many of you but, I actually have rather polarizing taste in figures. On one hand, the bread and butter of my collection consist of strong, independent female heroines such as Tomoe Mami (from Puella Magi Madoka Magica) and Major Motoko Kusanagi (from Ghost in the Shell). On the other hand, I have a tendency to collect more "traditional" bishoujo character figures such as, and most notably, Super Sonico and Atago (from Kantai Collection). To me, each of these genre of figures have a place in my collection be it prize figure or premium scale figures. That being said, I still have a leaning towards the former if I had to make the difficult decision of immediately having to halve my collection.

Which brings me to the figure on today's wish-list and one that has had me rather smitten as of late, Max Factory's Galko-chan figure. Based of the surprisingly popular anime short series, Oshiete Galko-chan (English: Please Tell Me, Galko-chan), we have here the titular character of the series. Released by Max Factory sometime in February 2017, this is one of the few scale figures made of Galko-chan and costs a handsome 14,630 Yen (before tax).

That price may sound like a lot especially for what appears to be a rather simple scale figure. That is, until you realize just how large the figure is because of its colossal 1/6 scale. The entire figure (without the staircase) is roughly 275 mm tall! To give you a better idea of the scale, check out Kahotan's preview where she photographs Galko-chan next to her iPhone 6S. All of that is before you factor into consideration the overall quality of the figure, which judging from production and collector's photos, hold up their own just fine.

When you take all those factors into consideration, the asking price does not sound so bad then. In fact, Good Smile Company even offers an Original B2 Poster of Galko-chan as a pre-order bonus. With slightly over three months having passed since release, the problem now boils down to availability. On the re-sellers market, an unopened Galko-chan goes for roughly 10,000 Yen which is a good 30% discount over the original sticker price. Granted you may not be getting the figure first-hand but, the value is still hard to deny. Now, I wonder if prices will continue to drop any further?

To the uninitiated, Galko-chan looks like a typical trashy gyaru-type with her tanned skin, blonde hair and elaborate makeup. But as the series goes on to prove, there is a lot more to her (and her friends) then what appears on the surface. Following the old adage to "never judge a book by its cover", Galko-chan works up to be a surprisingly refreshing and likable character. I guess it is no surprise she won over so many new fans after the first season of the anime aired. So much so, that a whole 30 minute OVA was made for the series shortly after!

Additional parts include her red glasses which look too cute!
Typically when it comes to figures, I would often apply the "One-Week Test" to gauge my actual interest in the figure itself. By the end of a week, if I still find myself gravitating towards the figure, that is when I decide to actively look out for a good price. With Max Factory's Galko-chan, she has passed more than just a week and now resides as my next big figure to get.

Although you may be wondering, what about the Nendoroid version of Galko-chan? Should I not get that first instead? Well, you are about to find out real soon.
