Let's Review: DX1 Tomoe Mami

As promised, it's time for a new review of a Mami figure. This time we'll be taking a look at the DX1 Tomoe Mami figure. Truth be told, I always get a little worried when it comes to doing a review of a Mami figure. That's because I always want to take the best possible pictures to capture things as best a possible and I'm always a little dejected if a particular shot doesn't live up to my expectation. Hopefully these rounds of shots are up to scratch!

As usual before we being the review, let's quickly go through some basic information about this Mami figurine. Standing 160 mm (6.3 inches), this relatively short figurine is manufactured by Banpresto as part of their DX Figure lineup for the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series. Originally intended as a prize figure, it isn't uncommon to find the DX series figures sold online or in various shops rather commonly. It may have been launched back in November 2011 but, it is still readily available online. Now then, onto the review!

As you can see, Mami's in a pretty simple pose this time. Just enjoying a hot cup of tea after a hard day's work of Witch-slaying. While simple, I'm actually quite fond of this pose. It is simple but, at the same time really lovely.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Mami's expression. Not only are the proportions of her face a little off, her smile also looks a little muted. Only at the right angles does it look like she's smiling. Otherwise, it looks rather emotionless or in this case, Mami just looks kinda bored.

It is nice that Banpresto has made some effort to fill the contents of the tea cup with a clear polymer albeit the colour sharing little resemblance to tea. Also, the finish isn't very good as the spillover is quite obvious

Don't the twin tails look too wide? I sure think so. It would've been nicer if there were a tad bit narrower as it would make the head look less "heavy".

As is, Mami's magical girl outfit is rather simple in terms of details. Hence, the figurine doesn't have much problem replicating it, including the white ribbon at the back which tucks nicely in between the folds of her skirt. Although, it does look a little too plastic in my opinion.

Ever remember Mami's Soul Gem being so large? Me neither but, it does kinda the look somehow. Pity the Soul Gem itself isn't clear.

"Just where do you think you're looking?"

The base too is really simple but, it's easily one of my favourite things about this figurine. The lovely floral pattern surrounding the Soul Gem with "MAMI" written atop it, perfect.

Maybe Mami isn't drinking tea?

Instead of paying so much attention to the upper body, let's take a look at the lower half. This is one part which really impressed me only after I've taken this shot. The legs are really well sculpted with the border between the stockings and her thighs in a smooth continuation. Then there's the white pin stripes which are finished impeccably.

Oh, no! A manufacturing seam in the left arm.

So, what's the verdict? There's no doubt it is well painted, detailed and finished. On top of that, the pose is sweet and colour choice is pretty good. The facial expression though, to me, is one of the biggest downside to this otherwise lovely figurine.

If you manage to spot one of these, either online or in shops, I'd say go for it. They're usually not too expensive and well worth the addition into the collection. I'm still trying to get my hands on the DX figure of Mami in her school uniform and hopefully I can get it soon.
